Masters of Melody – Contemporary 20th Century American Music

Dennis Chandler, M.A., Ph.D.

aka

“The Ed-U-tainer” ®

Dennis has presented this music at many places from east to west and all around. Let me describe what Dennis does as “The Ed-U-tainer” playing what he prefers to call, “The Golden Age of American Music”.

“Masters of Melody” identifies the essence of musical integrity. It is a musical journey into the lives of those who created music that will never be equaled. The lyrics, music and times that should be remembered. The world wanted our music and they got it. Now there is a need to know more about what the world has come to appreciate … American music from the past. It is good to document cultural history … to see where music has been … and to see where music can go.

Dennis also features some of the greatest composers of the Century. Their music touched the lives of generations in a way that left an indelible, never to be forgotten impression. For many audience members … these melodies and lyrics produced memories that might be dormant but will be resurrected, when these songs are heard. For others listening … they just might be inspired to create their own new memories, when these songs are heard.

Experiencing these little magical moments from the past will make one understand … how melodic music was an essential component of Broadway, movies and television … how it could go ’round the world … how it still stands up.

For 38+ years … Pianist Dennis Chandler … has enjoyed the honor, the privilege and the pleasure of playing .. 🎹 … all around one special campus. The one called “the Menorah Campus”.

As an “Ambassador of Melody” … he invites staff, residents and their guests to join in the fun. To paraphrase a line from the Broadway musical, “Gypsy” … “and let him entertain … err … ed-u-tain you” … and … “you’ll have a real good time”. How?

Dennis has been doing what we call … his weekly visits … where he plays his learning / concert series.

He spotlights songs from … AMERICA’S GOLDEN AGE of MUSIC. Music from THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK.

He will gladly return … whenever invited … wherever … on that special campus. Dennis does a playing engagement … weekly at Deer Creek Lodge (previous to December 2023 … it was called Wiggins Place).

New .. November 1, 2026 .. will be his first performance at The Piazza on the campus of King David (formerly Menorah Park). He has accepted their invitation to play piano there .. on .. the-first-Sunday-of-each-month. He thanks the staff .. residents .. their visiting family and friends. He welcomes serving musical duty anywhere .. on that campus. Just call him and he “.. will be there .. you’ve got a friend” .. (to quote a song lyric).

As I alluded … that atrium has AN ALLURE … all its own. Adding to the atmosphere … is a GRAND PIANO. It is … another one upon which … CHANDLER-THE-CHAMELEON … gets to play some GRAND MUSIC.

Dennis’ DEEP REPERTOIRE reflects … his LOVE of playing those GRAND … aka … GOLDEN TUNES. But only … IF … the piano is … in tune.

What if it is NOT … in tune? … In AN EMERGENCY … HIS EAR … has … HIS HAND doing some … ON-THE-SPOT-TUNING. Yes … with a little bit of luck … he can push some paper … ‘tween the strings … and … “Voilà “ … he’s in tune … (so to speak). Why is it so important to Musician-Dennis? It is a necessity … since he has … THE-MIXED-BLESSING of PERFECT PITCH. (Although, he says it’s NOT perfect … it’s relative).

Speaking of relatives …

After one performance … some regulars-in-the-audience … asked … THE ED-U-TAINER …

“You always seem to top your last performance here. How do you do it?”

Dennis countered with … “Thank you …

I think it is due to … ALL those MANY, MANY … COMPOSERS OF GOOD MELODIC MELODIC MUSIC.

Hence … the title of my program … ‘Masters of Melody’. THEY are the ones who deserve to be applauded. BUT … I’ll gladly take … a little … it is appreciated!”

Yes, ’tis been told … MUSICIAN-DENNIS adds to that … ALL-IN-THE-FAMILY feeling … there in … their ATRIUM … à la … their … LIVING ROOM. Pianist-Dennis aka “MISHPOCHA-DENNIS”.

He says he’ll take that title, too.

(What an added Blessing).
