It was right onstage &#8230; at the rehearsal for this Cleveland concert. It happened when HEADLINER HAWKINS came out from the wings &#8230; that backup musician Dennis stopped playing. He exclaim out loud &#8230; how much he loved &#8220;that &#8230; La-Do-Da-Da song&#8221;. He was referring to when he first heard Hawkins&#8217; hit record. The above photo shows how Dale &#8220;SUSIE-Q&#8221; Hawkins always responded with such VERVE to the music being made. (In this case by musical director Dennis&#8217; solo on &#8220;MY BABE&#8221;). That&#8217;s the way Dale did all things &#8230; with VERVE. Dale\u2019s dear friend the late, great BLUESMAN WILLIE DIXON wrote that song &#8230; bu &#8230; I would venture to say &#8230; few performed it with such passion, like &#8220;the Hawk&#8221;. The rockabilly legend had many other hit songs. But, again &#8230; the one titled, &#8220;La-Do-DaDa&#8221;&#8230; had special meaning from the high school days of another person. That person was Steven Spielberg. Turns out Dale got to learn how special it was to the legendary film maker. How it happened follows &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Great TRAINMEN think along the same lines. And great MUSIC LOVERS &#8230; sing the same tunes, (so to speak). Go get a BIG cup of coffee or tea &#8230; then read on.<\/p>\n<p>First &#8230; &#8217;bout MUSIC. How THREE LEGENDS LIKE LIONEL ELECTRIC TRAINS. So here&#8217;s the setup as to why the ICONIC FILM MAKER STEVEN SPIELBERG &#8230; asked to meet the ICONIC ROCKABILLY SINGER DALE HAWKINS. Dale had many hits &#8230; here are two &#8230;&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1TWrFuPtZ18\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1TWrFuPtZ18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the song that Spielberg liked is the same song &#8230; that was responsible for Dale and Dennis meeting. It&#8217;s how DC came to be asked by DH &#8230; to serve as musical director &#8230;. whenever he could.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The song? One with a funny title, \u201cLa-Do-DaDa\u201d\u2026 but with special meaning for Spielberg. Again from the high school days &#8230; of yet another youth. Turns out Dale got to learn how special it was to him. Keep reading &#8230; get another cup of coffee or tea, if you like &#8230; and listen &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X1-Hx_8aEMY\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X1-Hx_8aEMY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Break&#8217;s over. To continue &#8230; Dale began to tell us the back story &#8230; when he called our landline. (Yes, Youngins&#8217; &#8230; we had no cells then).<br \/>\nThe call came just after the two had met &#8230; down in Nashville. But, he was so excited \u2026 we could hardly decipher &#8230; that-deep-down-Southern-drawl-of-Dale\u2019s. So he stopped talking &#8230; took a deep breath and began again. He slowed his drawl to tell us \u2026 \u201cOK, let me tell you in YANKEE&#8221; &#8230; (read: the King&#8217;s English).<\/p>\n<p>Turns out Spielberg wanted to meet Dale. To thank the Rockabilly legend for &#8230; \u201cMY MOST FAVORITE SONG FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL YEARS &#8230; \u2018La-Do-Dada\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Backstory is &#8230; that meeting came about because of some very caring creative-types. They made it happen &#8230; for \u201cThe Hawk\u201d. But, it almost didn&#8217;t happen. To explain &#8230;&nbsp;<br \/>\nEarlier that evening, a mutual recording executive friend of Spielberg\u2019s and Hawkins &#8230; called Dale at home (on his landline). That producer asked, &#8220;Please come over to Nashville &#8230; (from Dale\u2019s home in Little Rock, Arkansas) \u2026 I have a SURPRISE for you&#8221;. I never did catch his name from the Hawk &#8230; drawl and all.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhen he arrived at the Nashville studio &#8230; Dale was placed in one studio &#8230; told to wait.&nbsp; Dale said he sat so long &#8230; that he got tired and being an impatient-type &#8230; he left. But, his friend caught him &#8230; brought him back. Then from another studio &#8230; brought in that &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;&#8230; BIG FAN WHO WANTS TO MEET &#8230;THE GREAT DALE HAWKINS!&#8221; DH said he looked up and saw it was &#8230; THE GREAT STEVEN SPIELBERG!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Spielberg\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Spielberg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As they were being introduced to one another \u2026 Dale said he was surprised &#8230; how SOFT-SPOKEN &#8230; Steven Spielberg was. Plus he was impressed &#8230; how MILD-MANNERED &#8230; the movie maker was. Then \u2026 WHAM \u2026 with &#8230; ROBUST ENTHUSIASM &#8230; Steven told Dale &#8230; just how he felt about that song. (BTW &#8230; It was the same thing that Dennis told him &#8230; about Dale\u2019s song being his most favorite song from his high school years)<br \/>\nSteven Spielberg proceeded to also say &#8230; how he felt Dale\u2019s song still found such favor with him \u2026 after all these years.<\/p>\n<p>When Dale first called us \u2026 he started to say, \u201cSpielberg said about his song, \u2018La-Do-DaDa\u2019\u2026 the SAME THING \u2026THE SAME WAY &#8230; Dennis did\u201d. (Recall &#8230; I wrote above of THEIR first meeting at that rehearsal onstage prior to \u201cplaying the Palace\u201d?).<\/p>\n<p>In turn, Dennis told Dale that proves \u2026 what a gift his song was \u2026 still is \u2026 and &#8230; as its writer \u2026 Dale should feel proud. It withstood the test of time and memory, too. What a Blessing for any songwriter.<br \/>\nDale was special and his music still is special. We were so happy for him. One day we hope to let Steven know &#8230; how happy he made &#8230; &#8220;The Hawk&#8221;. In the meanwhile, we thank him here.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So about those down-home-Dale-ways. Oftentimes \u201cThe Hawk\u201d, looked out for \u2018ta other. Yet he always wanted to TOP any tale &#8230; sorta like doin\u2019 the dozens. He started to put a tag on the Spielberg story &#8230;<br \/>\nWe both were still on our end of the landline. Then in his self-deprecating way \u2026 he turned attention &#8216;ta other person. In this case \u2026 both of us. Dale gave a varied, \u201cSee, Dennis you could say \u2026 you and Steven Spielberg think along the same lines &#8230; like lovin&#8217; that song\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Now &#8230;&nbsp; &#8217;bout Legends Lovin&#8217; Lionel&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response to Dale\u2019s kind, \u201cGreat-minds-think-along-the-same-lines\u201d comment &#8230; Dennis said, \u201cWell, alright\u201d. Then he thought Dale might like to hear how &#8230; another mutual friend of all of us &#8230; enjoyed meeting the GREAT STEVEN SPIELBERG, too.<\/p>\n<p>DC was referring to THE GREAT BB KING (or POPPA&nbsp; BB, as we lovingly called him). For the Uniformed &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/dennischandler.com\/index.php\/b-b-king-lucille\/\">https:\/\/dennischandler.com\/index.php\/b-b-king-lucille\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So Den shared what BB told us &#8230; about him getting to see Spielberg\u2019s electric trains. It happened after BB finished playing the Universal Amphitheatre &#8230; that he was invited him to the backlot.<\/p>\n<p>BB being the EVER PLAYFUL KID &#8230; albeit A BIG KID &#8230; had to feel like A LITTLE KID &#8230; going out after school. There they went &#8230; to that famous Spielberg Bungalow on the Back Lot. BB said he just loved the whole experience. What a host he was. \u201cThe host with the mostest\u201d.<br \/>\nBut, BB King \u2026 being the consummate Southern gentleman \u2026 always tried to relate to the other person, too. So he said to Steven Spielberg, \u201cOh, my friend, Dennis has electric trains. But, I can\u2019t quite recall what kind \u2026 but, they look to be the same\u201d.<br \/>\nWell, they are the same type \u2026 Lionel \u2026 and they are from the same time. The Post-War era \u2026 (as in SS &amp; DC\u2019s childhood years).<br \/>\nSee great trainmen think along the same lines. And great music lovers &#8230; sing the same tunes, (so to speak). He said it was because of a couple of childhood gifts &#8230;&nbsp; a LIONEL electric train and a SUPER 8mm movie camera.<\/p>\n<p>In interviews SS often addresses how &#8220;the movie making&#8221; started for him &#8230; by filming the crashing of his trains &#8230; his LIONEL trains. So that&#8217;s when the train bug bit Spielberg.
