What did I find … filed away … paraphrasing a  song, “in the still, still … of the night”. Well, actually … paraphrasing a movie title, in the “Heat of the Night” … err … in the heat of our attic?<\/p>\n

I found BOXES of TAPE. What kind? REEL-to-REEL, CASSETTE, etc. They had SURVIVED the HEAT of OUR ATTIC. I took that as a SIGN from ABOVE. I brought them DOWN to Dennis. He was busy … writing his book and teaching Music. I realized I had to be the one… to deal with the dubs, (so to speak). To archive them. To put them somewhere. But where? How? <\/p>\n

What did I do? I started to learn more about … all things, Tech. Literally, I had my homework cut out for me. What do I mean? Well, in 2017 … I broke my hand. A cast was put on my arm. I was put in my place. I was assigned … to stay in one place. Where? In front of a TV screen to pass the time away.<\/p>\n

Then I made the move to another screen. A computer screen. At first it was a little screen … then I upgraded to a larger one. Computer-operator-me … conquered a couple more disabilities. The learning types, (so to speak). To explain … I already was a typist-of-sorts … albeit … a-not-too-accurate one. I fight to overcome fumbling with words. BUT … moving words … from the back-burner-of-my-brain … to … the keyboard-in-front-of-me?<\/p>\n

I solved that … by writing and reading on only BIG SCREENS. No LITTLE DEVICE SCREENS, for me. My i-phone is for taking phone calls and photos. OK, I’m getting good at text-speaking … (did I “say” that right, Tech Teach Brandon Bonner?)<\/p>\n

So back to how I’ve learned to be … just dangerous enough … to go … “do-bee-do-bee-doing”, (to paraphrase the song by Sinatra). ADOBE Photo Shop. That’s the name of the software. It allowed me to go … photo-saving … photo-shopping … and … some Soul-searching, too. Yes, it can make one … reflect on the past Times and the lost ones, still, (pardon the pun).   <\/p>\n

Back to the time of … THE COVID LOCKDOWN. There were more struggles. But I prevailed. Ask DC … about that … and … about me being a REBEL … (when I want to be). How did I learn that ? In school … at John Adams High … in Cleveland’s Mt. Pleasant area. Where the Rebel cry was … “Go Maroon and Gold!” I did.<\/p>\n

We three … Dennis, Phil and myself<\/em> … are NEURODIVERGENTS<\/strong> … aka … NEURODIVERSE<\/strong>. (“Refers to people … whose thought patterns, behaviors, or learning styles … fall outside … of what is considered … “normal,” or neurotypical of humans<\/b>“.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lately, I have found myself REALLY enjoying certain songs. The ones composed by MY HUBBY … Dennis Chandler<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> and MY BROTHER, Phil Smoluk. Why? \u2026
Because \u2026 both \u2026 DC and PSS \u2026 are SURVIVORS OF CANCER.<\/p>\n


First about Dennis … In the Winter of 1987 … Dennis was diagosed with LEUKEMIA-TYPE AML. He was admitted to an E.R. in East Cleveland, Ohio. He was “brought back” … after a near-death-experience … (the first of two).
After 32 days in that hospital … I brought him home to Solon … where he was bedridden for several months. Then … Winter to turned to Spring … and … CANCER-PATIENT-Dennis became CANCER-SURVIVOR-DENNIS!
Thanks to EXPERIMENTAL CHEMOS and CONSOLIDATING CHEMOS. (Some INCLUDED … AMPHOTERICIN … AN AGRESSIVE CHEMO. HEALTHCARE WORKERS … CALL … “AMPHA-TERRIBLE”).<\/p>\n

BUT … thanks to the teaching hospital … that Huron was … at the time … there was quite a team of nursing students to tend to the patients there.
\nThere were as many as 32+ nurses that I witnessed in waitng. I gave up counting … even though I was there daily for those 32 days.
\nThose Huron Road Hospital employees were led by Oncologist, Dr. Hoon Park.
\nSadly … in 2023 … Dr. Park lost his own battle with Cancer. His memory is a Blessing.
\nAs is … Dennis’ Blessing of … being in remission since 1987.
\nAbove all … we thank …THE GOOD LORD!<\/p>\n

Today … in 2025 … Phil is still … “fighting the good fight”.Because of Cancer … Phil is minus a kidney … minus his gall bladder … BUT … he still has his bladder … thanks to BCG…  <\/span>Bacillus Calmette-Gu\u00e9rin, a live, attenuated strain of bacteria used as immunotherapy to treat non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC)<\/mark>.  <\/span>\ud83d\udd2c<\/span><\/span>Special THANKS to the V.A. Oncology Docs, Nurses, etc. … at V.A.-Stokes, V.A.-Parma …. Cleveland Clinic-Fairview … and the good Lord. We are Blessed!” <\/span><\/p>\n

“About the subject of diversity. To explain the beginnings of a couple of what I call “special” songs … let\u2019s go back in time \u2026 to the 1960s.<\/p>\n

Mention was made in earlier posts … about when Bandleader-Chandler … headed up his group called … \u201cThe Pilgrims\u201d… back in his hometown of Cleveland.
\nThen came those days in Detroit. The ones that helped him earn … a Doctorate-in-Diversity, so to speak. He got to play all the ‘hoods around town.<\/p>\n

Then it happened that he was asked to do musical work for CKLW Radio … as houseband. The AM station was “a legendary radio powerhouse\u201d. What’s that?.. and … what made that particular station … so strong a power broker?

Sooo … when that station solicited Bandleader Chandler … to couple his band with their events and promotions \u2026. Dennis jumped at the chance.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how he had such wonderful opportunities \u2026 to perform. For so many different artists and audiences. He said he “just loved those days in ‘da hoods of the Motor City”.
\nLessons learned \u2026 from his days of playing around the Detroit \/ Windsor area in the EARLY 60\u2032s \u2026 helped him to cope … with Cleveland\u2019s social changes of the LATE 60\u2032s.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when the waves … of what was called TURBULENT SOCIAL UNREST …. hit home …. here in Ohio.
\nLittle did Dennis think he\u2019d be feeling them … firsthand … as a member of the OHIO NATIONAL GUARD.
\nIt happened when he was called up from their Reserves … to serve active duty \u2026 at various venues of protest.
\nThe-powers-that-were-at-the-time \u2026 thought a military presence \u2026 would help reduce the numbers of attendees. History proved them wrong.<\/p>\n

Talk ’bout Blues … in ‘da hood … here in Ohio? Guardsman-Dennis was first called for riot duty … to a place that he often played … as Musician-Dennis. A popular place … the summer tourist trap that bikers loved to cruise to. Geneva-on-the-Lake. After that breakup of bikers …<\/p>\n

Next active duty … was in ‘da hoods of Cleveland. In places where he had performed … as an accompanist … to inner-city-bluesmen. In the communites called …. Hough, Glenville and Collinwood.
\nBTW \u2026 that last-named-community … was one that … many years earlier … Little-Youthful-Dennis played in. NOT … on a stage \u2026 but on a train \u2026 as in the real thing \u2026 the Collinwood Railroad Yards.<\/p>\n

Next active duty … was for the riot called … \u201cThe Truckers Strike\u201d.
\nPvt. Chandler found himself near Shaker Square … MY ‘hood. What do I mean?
\nHe was called up to report to an Armory nearby. The one located … around the corner from MY Colony. What do I mean?
\nI was an RKO Theatre Manager. Running the Colony … and … the Vogue Theatre.
\nSo I invited the Commandant of the Armory \u2026 to send his troops over to the Square. He did. Guess what Private came along for the ride … and … for a free movie?<\/p>\n

We hosted them for a special screening \u2026 I do not remember the name of the movie.
\nWhat I DO recall … is that they took over the candy stand. Ate all the popcorn they could.
\nBut, I did not mind … for MY intermission was spent with Pvt. Chandler.<\/p>\n

On a more serious note \u2026 thank Goodness … Hubby-Dennis … was NOT called up to go to … “the trouble at KENT STATE”.<\/p>\n

Now … about MY BIG BROTHER Phil. He WAS at KENT STATE … as … A DAY STUDENT.
\nSadly I was right to be worried about that fateful day … in May (1970).<\/p>\n

Let me now give you … a little background on how he came to be at Kent.
\nPhil first began attending collage at Ohio Wesleyan University.
\nWhen he ran out of funding … he enlisted in the military. He joined the Navy.
\nThough he never was on a ship \u2026 he did get to travel. Hawaii and Japan was where he was sent to serve duty.
\nAt the air base in Japan \u2026 he had to work on black boxes … (retrieved from military aircraft downed in Southeast Asia!)
\nBut … he loved the various cultures and the shared experiences of that region.<\/p>\n

I write about that here … to give perspective on the following. Phil returned home to Cleveland. He went to Kent State University to finish his schooling.
\nDaily after his classes … he would commute to work for me. I was the Manager of the Colony Theatre on Shaker Square, as I previously mentioned. Phil came to do duty \u2026 chores, etc.<\/p>\n

But, that day \u2026 when he did \u201cmake it out\u201d of Kent \u2026 he showed up late to work. He told of being there \u2026 trying to leave \u2026 to get to his car. He had a little VW Bug and he\u2019d always manage to find a parking spot \u2026 \u201cclose to where \u2026 all the action is\u201d.<\/p>\n

Well, that day in May of 1970 \u2026 the action turned into what became known as … \u201call Hell breaking loose\u201d. Phil came to the Colony from Kent … quite shaken up.
\nI recall … what he told me \u2026 about what he experienced … (his “close call”).
\nBut .. in these recent Times … I brought up that day from long ago … he demurred.<\/p>\n

In conlcusion … as a writer … I am reminded of a saying of Socrates \u2026 \u201cAll things feed the mind\u201d. Thus \u2026 methinks … this song tells the tale.<\/p>\n

Upon meeting and melding musically with the iconic Harold Bradley … a GUITAR HERO to Dennis<\/strong> … HB asked to hear some original songs. We obliged him. Then he asked Dennis to do DEMOS for him. We did.<\/p>\n

Who was Harold Bradley? For starters … HB was one of the “Nashville Cats”… celebrated and memorialized in song<\/em>. Why? They were members of the “A Team” … early recording session musicians<\/em>. In fact, Harold and his brother Owen Bradley built the Quonset Hut … which started Nashville’s landmark Music Row. To learn more … go to … <\/strong><\/p>\n

So naturally when Harold said he loved them and wanted demos sent down South … to his home. (See his biz card, etc.) Well, we started to … then … sadly Harold passed.<\/p>\n

Then … Life took us down a different direction … that included sprinting over new health hurdles. But, now … having overcome them … we race on.<\/p>\n

It’s 2025<\/strong> … To paraphrase Oscar Hammerstein’s song … “June is busting out all over”, still.<\/em>  As up … in … OUR RECORDING LOFT.<\/p>\n

That’s where I found files of raw demos of our original music. That included these dubs I did. They’re from … old cassettes … old reel-to-reels. BTW … I am fearful of handling them. Why? Brittle tapes can break. So you will have to wait to hear them … as I wait on someone … to help me with them. (Can you spell … p-r-o-f-e-s-s-i-o-n-a-l … engineer. Any out there? I will take any comers!)  <\/p>\n

To the Publishers … For the Public at large … <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Perhaps it’s not too late … to plant the seeds of melody<\/strong> … and … bring to Harvest … what Harold Bradley wanted to hear. He wanted MELODIC MUSIC … to make a comeback. He wanted … songs with hooks. He said … formula songs. The kind  that could give the listener … something to latch onto.   <\/strong><\/p>\n

I ponder and wonder … whom dear Harold Bradley … would have presented these tunes to? Hence this page … where I have only just begun … to post and upload the raw demos. <\/p>\n

I can only guess what <\/span>Angel Harold would like to hear … from Above<\/strong>. <\/em>I dunno how to do this Cyberspace things, yet. <\/span>But I plan … to learn … Youtube … Spotify … Zoom, too. (Calling on Angels!)   <\/span><\/p>\n

1977<\/strong> … those contracts were of the kind that are called … Contracts of 360 Degrees. Again … defined by many as … “A lock on all that one does”. Who would that “one”  be, so to speak? The driving wheel of our creative endeavors … Chandler-the-Chameleon.  <\/strong>Dennis would not<\/em> have been able to do many of the various and sundry “stuff” …. that he wanted to do … (at that time). Is it any wonder many declined this type of deal. Musician Dennis did. Wordsmith Phil did … and I did, too.     <\/p>\n

Also we were inspired by Gladys Knight<\/strong>. As a matter of fact, I found in the files … contracts that included songs for her. Some of the other contracts … offered … were for my hubby Dennis, my brother Phil Smoluk and me. Read on …<\/p>\n

2025<\/strong> … Re-organizing has me finding these raw demos<\/em><\/strong>. I am prioritizing<\/strong><\/em> … playing back the reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes. Trying to figure out … what to transfer so I can upload … for your listening and dancing pleasure. Wish me luck, as I continue. <\/p>\n

I shredded the paper files and correspondence … from SAS Publishing … a division of the management firm for BB King and Gladys Knight. The files<\/strong> were too faded, (so to speak). But, the songs<\/strong> are not … I will NOT … let them fade away.    <\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking of the above-mentioned musical Giant … the Great Songstress … Gladys Knight<\/strong>. Perhaps a past musical tie … might come back<\/strong><\/em> into our lives. Actually he still<\/strong><\/em> is … via God’s Cyberspace. He’s a Facebook Friend. Who? The Great Gladys’ … Groovy Percussionist … <\/span>Elijah Gilmore<\/strong>. Thanks to our Amigo from Argentina, Michael Paley<\/a>. We had him help host a visit to our home here, (in Solon, Ohio). To explain, guest Elijah got to attend … what I dubbed … “A Salon in Solon”. As a result Migel brought Elijah over to engage in fellowship and have a jam. Maybe we can do it again … right here … right now. OK, after Gilmore gets a night off … and … Gladys gets a night off. What we wanted for the 1977<\/strong> song … was … for not only Gladys Knight to sing it … but … with BB King in harmony, too. In front of “a rainbow audience”. What do I mean? I wanted to see what I saw … back in 1974. Where was that In Canada … at …”The Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival in Exile”.<\/p>\n

What an experience. Thus we envisioned AN ALL INCLUSIVE CHOIR with singers Gladys Knight … BB King … “fronting” them. BB loved doing that sort of singing … since he said he was very much influenced by choir singers … ala  “I came from the church”. (Google about what influenced BB King and his Blues). But … sadly BB passed in 2015  … but … perhaps he’s singing this song … up above … with that Almighty Choir. <\/p>\n

One whose CD … BB asked us to … send to his manager. Sid Seidenberg. We did. I do NOT know if SAS<\/strong> … the publishing arm of BBK<\/strong> & GK<\/strong> … did anything for her. But we just knew … she was destined for more … than Sid … could do for her. We guess that she did it herself, no doubt. What was that? Jumped from Playhouse Square<\/strong> … to … Times Square<\/strong>. Why do I put it like that? ….<\/p>\n

In 2014 <\/strong>… MBD was nominated for a Tony award for Best Lead Actress in a musical on Broadway. <\/strong>That’s where Mary Bridget played the iconic singer, Janis Joplin. <\/strong>Then came 2024 … she got rave reviews, again. When? Where? Summer … in the West End … of London. See … Dreams really do come true. So happy for her. <\/p>\n

\nYes … the song was presented with … JUST SHEET MUSIC … and … it was SUNG … BY AN UNKOWN. It was described to us … as being in the style of those early songpluggers on NYC’s Tin Pan Alley. The ones pictured in the movies … (pardon the pun). But … I digress.<\/p>\n

Back story is \u2026 back in the day … THE GREAT GAMBLE & HUFF … held several series of SONGWRITING SEMINARS … in various locations.<\/p>\n

The LEGENDS from their RECORD LABEL they called THE SOUNDS OF PHILLY \u2026 were in NYC \u2026 conducting CLASSES for COMPOSERS.<\/p>\n

My brother Phil took it upon himself … at great expense … to drive to Manhattan … to pitch some of our songs. He had no demo to present \u2026 just the song. Phil is not a musician \u2026 he is a lyricist.
\nI prefer to calll him A WORDSMITH. He is my “sounding board” … on all things, written … (so to speak).
\nFortunately for us \u2026 the judges were some real creative-types. Again … to repeat … the song was presented with … just sheet music \u2026 and sung \u2026 by an unknown!<\/p>\n

Gamble & Huff \u2026 gave it … A RAVE REVIEW. We were also told that they loved the song so much \u2026 they used it as … AN EXAMPLE to others … at their events. High Praise, in deed.<\/p>\n

So what happened, after? The producers offered us … the kind of contract I previously wrote about … (and scanned for our website).
\nThe contracts were like the ones offered us … by BB King & Gladys Knight’s management.
\nThe ones often called \u2026 Contracts of 360 Degrees. Again \u2026 defined by many as \u2026 \u201cA lock on all that one does\u201d.
\nWho would that \u201cone\u201d be … so to speak?
\nThe driving wheel of our creative endeavors \u2026 Chandler-the-Chameleon.
\nIt meant that Dennis would not have been able to do many of the various and sundry \u201cstuff\u201d \u2026. that he wanted to do \u2026 (at that time).<\/p>\n

BUT … it was GAMBLE & HUFF. Just when we were about to sign … we got diverted \u2026 different directions, etc.

Speaking of believers from back in the day … there was this neighbor \u2026 Lou Kassouf … (of Blessed Memory).
\nShe wrote a Prophecy About Dennis Chandler<\/span>. It was after Neighbor-Lou saw Jogger-Dennis \u2026 running again. She said she wrote out \u2026 what she … \u201cwas given from Above\u201d. She titled it \u2026 “A Discernment for Dennis \u2026 a Prophecy”.<\/p>\n

Lou said she mailed it \u2026 even though she could have dropped it off. She always drove past our home … from her home \u2026 here in North Hill.
\nBut, I\u2019m glad she did mail it.
\nWe have it … and … it is postmarked Feb.14,1988.
\nA Holi-day to be celebrated, for sure. So Den did.<\/p>\n

Cancer-Patient-Chandler … got back to jogging after beating Leukemia -Type AML … and … after surviving those extreme chemo treatments.(Amphotericin aka “Ampho-terrible” as Nurses call it).

I say \u201cyet\u201d … because \u2026 we can always hope, no? How so? A FAN of PIANIST-DENNIS \u2026 said she might have a way \u2026 via a relative of hers \u2026 to connect DC to BS.
\nBut first I was asked \u2026 by that fan of DC\u2019s \u2026 \u201cWhat has been written about DC that I could share?\u201d Hence all this info here \u2026 but … get ready … I write like I ramble. And get another BIG cup of coffee.<\/p>\n

BTW: Back in the day \u2026 we told BB King about DC\u2019s admiration for her talents. Her voice, in particular. It plays in Dennis\u2019 mind, (so to speak). Poppa BB implied that BS would be easy to talk to. Why?
\nBB said when the two of them met \u2026 she was warm and so very gracious. He offered to help hook us up. \u201cFrom one artist to another to another\u201d, he said.
\nBut, it wasn\u2019t meant to be \u2026 sadly, Poppa BB passed, in 2015.<\/p>\n

BB is gone \u2026 but Barbra is still here. That\u2019s why \u2026 we say, \u201cwe have yet to meet her\u201d. It seems like a long way to go. However \u2026 there is an axiom \u2026 that \u2026 all-politics-is-local. I think that syndrome could be in play one day, soon.
\nHow so? Via another audience member of Pianist-Dennis. Someone who proferred info \u2026 about a relative of hers \u2026 having done a Broadway project with the songbird.
\nWell, that fan moved not too far from us. In fact, three miles away. (\u201cclose enough for rock and roll\u201d, as the saying goes.) See, all politics is local. I intended to follow through. Why? \u2026<\/p>\n

Summer 1993<\/strong>: Reunion of The Secrets.<\/p>\n

Three songs<\/strong><\/em> of Dennis’ … he re-recorded in 1993. They were for one very special reunion … and for one very special group. “The Secrets”. Who? A girl group from the ’60s … who had the ’63 hit song titled, “The Boy Next Door”.<\/p>\n

So what made this so special? These tunes brought back some rockin’ memories. Not just for them. But for Bandleader Chandler aka “the boy behind them”. As a past accompanist … Dennis did many a gig with the girls … back in the day, (as they say). But, what day? Shhh … it’s a secret.  \"\"<\/p>\n

\"ROCK<\/a><\/p>\n

That Secrets reunion session in 1993 … yielded a sort of mini-album, made up of original songs written by Dennis. Besides “Can You Feel It (That Rock ‘n’ Roll)” … the other songs included were … “Just a Rock ‘n’ Roll Melody” … and … (You’re) Never Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll”. <\/p>\n

Never actually released, these songs did get some airplay by the legendary disc jockey Norm N. Nite on his then-WMJI radio show. But, that station’s Program Director felt forced to nix any more airplay. His reasoning? This material, albeit old sounding<\/em>, was new<\/em> and … did not<\/em> fit the format of “Oldies” aka “Classic Rock”. He feared a floodgate effect of writers … submitting un<\/em>published songs.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, writer-Dennis was pleased that the iconic Norm N. Nite played the songs. After all, Norm was first to go to Ahmet Ertegun … to “pitch” Cleveland as the home of the rock hall. He was pleased to hear on air again the … by-then-ten-year-old … specially written song. It was very fulfilling to hear such positive feedback. <\/em>Those listeners loved the old-sounding new songs …<\/em> and told Norm so. <\/em>Rock on, Den did.<\/p>\n

About the Second Song Below: <\/strong><\/em> Drummer John Adams’ good vibrations were always felt … whenever that fan of all things, Cleveland … came ’round. So Bandleader Chandler oftentimes would egg him onstage … to sit in with his Stratophonics.<\/p>\n

That egging on … worked to the advantage of WHK Radio’s Houseband (DC & Strats).They were gathering signatures for a very special drive. The First Petition Drive and Campaign … to … “Bring the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to Cleveland”. The slogan is on the banner … which was later gifted to us by Malrite Communications’ Milt Maltz. It was designed by Artist David Helton. Local television news anchor Denise Dufala … announced “Dennis and his band were responsible for collecting over 200,000 of the 660,000 petition signatures” (total collected in 30 days). BACK STORY about … the song …  “Plymouth Rock”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

It was on the A side of a 45 record that this band had way back. The 1964 song was done by DC and a group of his hometown friends. The formed a band and called themselves, \u201cThe Pilgrims\u201d<\/strong>. Perhaps the name was fortuitous<\/em> … for they seemed aptly named<\/em>. Playing around \u2026 in the Detroit \/ Windsor area … in those places and in those times \u2026 in Detroit\u2019s musical history? It was, \u201cPriceless\u201d, Dennis said.  Why? They became <\/strong><\/em>the houseband for the legendary powerhouse Radio Station \u201cCKLW\u201d.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

In support of the station\u2019s musical format \u2026 they entertained at their many various live events and promotions … all around the area.  As … Pianist-Dennis … <\/strong><\/em>he also became arranger and accompanist<\/strong><\/em>  for even more diverse audiences<\/strong><\/em>. House parties<\/strong><\/em> of fond memory \u2026 included the ones at the residences<\/strong><\/em> of Rev. Cecil Franklin (Aretha\u2019s father) … and … Hank Ballard of \u201cHank Ballard & The Midnighters\u201d, to name just two. (Talk \u2018bout \u201cStand and deliver!\u201d) <\/p>\n

The lyrics were written by Dennis Chandler<\/span><\/a> and bassist Pete Dragas. The music was written by Bandleader Chandler. The other band members on the record … were drummer Ron Harkai, guitarist Glenn Schwartz and Dennis (who doubled on keyboards and guitar). Instrumentation arranged by DC … who also sang the song.<\/p>\n
