Prophecy for Dennis Chandler
A Prophecy for Dennis
The following was written by Lou Kassouf, then a neighbor of ours (from this community we live in called North Hill). She noted that she wrote it after he had played piano for a neighborhood gathering she had at her home.
It should be explained that when we first moved here back in late ’86, we hadn’t met any of the neighbors. We were busy, what with winter setting in and the next spring and summer saw us busy with Dennis’ playing engagements. Then came that long battle. It was after Dennis had recovered that we found out many in this community of 65 homes, had prayed for him! We were told that regardless of their spiritual traditions, many prayed for “the jogger”(as some related to him). So when Lou and her husband invited us to a gathering at their home, Dennis thought the least he could do was not just show up, but maybe make a little music for them, too. As you will read later, she notes that after he left “the following came to her”. Funny, too, is that although she lived on the next street and often passed our home, she mailed it to us and it got postmarked for Valentine’s Day. So when Dennis got it, he thought it a poem or set of lyrics. Here’s that special “Valentine” given via dear precious Lou…
AS YOU PRAY IN THE SPIRIT
YOUR EAR IS TRAINED TO HEAR
WHAT THE LORD WOULD SAY AND DO
AS HE SHARES HIS ABILITY WITH YOU
RECORDING SESSIONS WILL BE A BREEZE
A BROAD SPECTRUM OF STYLE
HONING THE WORD TO A FINE POINT
MUSIC IN A NEW SUPERNATURAL DIMENSION
BECAUSE I CAN TRUST YOU
I KNOW YOUR HEART
INNOVATIVE, FREE FLOWING AND EAR-CATCHING
WITH A WIDE, VARYING APPEAL
EXTRAORDINARY, FAR ABOVE YOUR PEERS
BECAUSE I TRUST YOU, THAT’S WHY
A NEW PIONEER MUSIC
A NEW STYLE
CAPTIVATING MINDS & HEARTS
MUSIC WITH INTRICATE NUANCES
YET SO SIMPLE
A STYLE ALL YOUR OWN
NONE LIKE IT BEFORE
A BIT OF HEAVEN’S CREATIVITY
TO BRING THOSE ON EARTH TO ME
ELEVATING THEIR HEARTS AND MINDS
SETTING THEM FREE
FROM INNER STRIFE UNITING THEIR HEARTS WITH MINE
BECAUSE THERE IS A HARVEST TO BRING IN
AND YOU I TRUST
TO DO IT
YOU I TRUST
THERE’S A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A JET
AND A SPACESHIP
YET THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IS HONED IN THE PAST
INTO A NEW DIMENSION
SOME FOR SALE
SOME ARE NOT
COMMERCIAL SONGS YOU’LL SELL
MINE YOU’LL SOW INTO THE HARVEST
AND I’LL BE YOUR REWARD
(Signed) “Dennis, the above came to me after you left” Lou Kassouf
May the good Lord see fit that this comes to pass. Amen.
As of this date, is some of this coming true?
Update.. About the musical Dennis Chandler composed 22 songs for. Titled “JUST WE TWO – A NEW MUSICAL”, it had its World Premiere here in Ohio (this past fall at The Tallmadge Theatre @ their High School. Wonder where do we go from here? NEW YORK? ON BROADWAY? OFF BROADWAY? OFF OFF BROADWAY?? Will it happen?
Director FRANK CHAFF IV seemed to think so or so it was thought that he thought (so). But, alas haven’t heard from him. Nor a peep from playwright-turned-producer Larry Brenner. Perhaps, they’ve embarked on the YELLOW BRICK ROAD on their own. NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS, me thinks. So, we we find Dennis waiting in the wings, not.
Take away lessons from this? Can’t tell yet. Waiting for the movie to come out. Literally, for there was a two-camera setup (but maybe editing takes longer these days). Film doesn’t lie. Put another way, “the proof is in the pudding”. Dennis says he’d like his dose.. he can take it. (THAT, we know.) ‘Tis said, “We die daily” (and that’s how we grow).
Going back in time… Preview of another critic read: “The music of “JUST WE TWO” is MAGNIFICENT!”…”Its MUSIC IS GREAT ON ITS OWN, SO IT IS INEVITABLE THAT SOMEONE WILL RISE UP TO THE TOP OF THIS SHOW! BRAVO, composer Dennis Chandler and playwright Larry Brenner!”
George Foster, NORTH CAROLINA OPERA
How good are the songs? We were told by the playwright that the critic who started all this, the one who after hearing JUST A FEW of the songs, said that if they couldn’t get any actors… to still do it. Even as A MUSICAL REVUE (with all 22 songs). The critic and the director both feel this family piece with its message is sorely needed today.
Going back in time… About the casting: When the show was being finally cast, THE SONGS ELICITED TEARS and then SPONTANEOUS APPLAUSE from those in attendance. That boded well for the music. For example, Composer Chandler was beside himself with JOY when a six year old immediatley picked up the melody of one particularly (he thought) difficult song. She got the melody in seconds. Sang it straightaway; full out. It wasn’t even her song. It was always his intention to make this play’s music memorable. He thought, “Out of the mouths of babes”?
Recall.. The PREMISE OF THIS PLAY is based on a situation EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO. A loved one lying in a bed in a hospital room. The play begins with family members coming into the room to visit. They are then seen one by one, pondering and reflecting upon their life together with the patient. Emotions come back in flashbacks, emotions come in the moment. They lament. They cajole. They sing their hearts out with their respective “SHOUDA-WOULDA-COUDAS”. Again, everyone will relate to this play. The book and lyrics were written with humor and pathos by (local) playwright Larry Brenner. Composer Dennis Chandler wrote the music in an older more “TRADITIONAL MELODIC BROADWAY STYLE” (even its rock’n’roll is melodic).
Still surviving.. Well, they made it. (Out of tragedy comes art. These two survivors.. “Know from whence they speak!”)
Motivation behind the premise of this play? Perhaps. After struggling to return to life before cancer (how could one ever do that, one could ask) but Dennis went on to business as usual or tried to. (For the financial devastation alone, he had to do business as usual and then some!) But, then Larry Brenner came back into his life (after overcoming his own health hurdles which included cancer) and told Dennis he had finished what they both started so long ago. It only recently dawned on Dennis the deep meaning of this premise for him. (Talk about a mental block!)
That’s why it appears the “Prophecy for Dennis” that Lou Kassouf was given and wrote down so long ago has already begun. But, you knew that when you started to read this, didn’t you?
